When I was giving my first book report to the Nottingham AI Meetup Group, I reviewed The Alignment Problem, by Stuart Russell. A young lady in the audience came up to me afterward and said "You should read 'The Coming Wave' ". It took me a while to get to. It is very interesting that Yoval Harari gives a commendation on the cover, because it shares a lot with Nexus in subject matter. Written in 2023, in the midst of the explosion of interest in ChatGPT. It starts of talking about AI but also talks about synthetic biology as being the two major technologies that will upend our species in the coming years.
His main point is the only hope is containment. Proliferation means a species level annihilation. However, he does not make that statement despairingly. More as if he is framing the work that needs to be done.
I was really interested that he briefly explore the artificial intelligence of a company and a society. I really wish that angle had been explored more deeply. I think it gives you a better sense of being in a process rather than looking at an event in the future.
He gives a set of recommendations. A manifesto really. From what I can see we have moved further away from every recommendation. The world looks much less likely to move toward containment. As such it had rather a chilling effect on me.
