I started reading Sapolsky's Determined following on from Behave but I got sidetracked into thinking a bit about Jung's ideas.  I came across this as a really good introduction.  Jung as an orginal source is quite hard to read.  

I had started to become fascinated with the idea of the collective unconsious.  The idea that there are motivations that guide our behaviour, of which we are only dimly aware, and that are in all of us.  In watching geese migrate or a blackbird picking up twiggs for a nest, it just got me thinking, "That must feel good".  In human terms we all share these myths and stories.  The details vary, but the patterns are the same.  The heroe's journey is an obvious example, whether it is Beoworlf or Jason or Spiderman, the pattern is the same across cultures and generations.  It makes us feel good. 

I was thinking that in pouring everything we have ever wriiten as a species into a Large Languge Model, some of that collective unconsious will emerge as a pattern.  As Jung points out, our unconsious is not only the bits that we are comfortable with.  It is not only the bits that we are aware of.  There is also a shadow. To repress it tends to lead to neurosis.  To reconcile with it is the process of individuation.  

As I work with Large Language Models and I notice how they are forced to stroke my ego, and have weights adjusted in reaction to the biases that we are pouring in to them, I wonder how they will adjust.  I sense there are things to learn from Jung in this respect.
