Folks that follow SSTC will know that I have been both impressed and troubled by how good ChatGPT is. I have heard many people speak about the impact in the classroom. My teaching experience is mostly in Higher Education. The impact here will be immense. We live with a large legacy of essay based assessment. At the time that I was teaching I had my own issues with this assessment methodology. It does not seem to prove that the ideas are in the mind of the writer. Now ChatGPT has blown that out of the water. You can give ChatGPT an essay to write, and it comes back with a well written, well presented, well cited research paper.
I had to stop and think whether the projects that I had set could be easily done in this manner. For example, I have a project to design a digital marketing campaign for a technology consulting company. In the objectives we are benchmarking against international, national and local providers. In the objectives, I made it clear that I would like a marketing plan that I can implement. Not a paper about marketing plans. As an educator, I have to think how the assessment has to be phrased. In the context of this project, I am happy that ChatGPT can be a research tool, and not a remote control that leaves student sitting on the couch eating cold pizza while the learning gets done by a machine.
