I caught up with James Todd, one of my old students, now a PHD student at University of Nottingham, to get an update on the CIIS Live event in Bristol.
Until James let me know that he was at this conference, I did not know that there was a Chartered Institute for Information Security.
I have many information security credentials myself, but I obtained them in the United States. I asked ChatGPT to draw me a spider graph for the skills emphasis of the top 5 Information Security Qualifications.
I asked copilot to rate the rate Chartered Institute of Information Security on the same axis for relative emphasis in its skill set. It came up with the following.
It is of note that emphasis leans toward incident response and network security.
The conference is both an opportunity for industry experts to educate the audience, for the research in information security to be showcased and for the industry to sell itself to young people considering entering the profession.
In reviewing the agenda, there were some great speakers and some great sessions.
Mike Fell, National Cyber Security Operations for NHS, talking about The Health of Cyber.
Peter Loomes, Chief Strategy Officer of IASME, discussing Why Good Cyber Hygine is Difficult to Achieve.
Stephen Bonner, Deputy Commissioner Information Commissioners Office
Lesley Kipling, Chief Security Advisor, Microsoft, discussing Resilience in the Cyber Supply Chain
The industry audience leans toward small and medium sized businesses. The conference sold out.
The research being showcased ranges from Extended Project Qualifications at A Level, (17 – 18 year old for our non UK readers) to PHD. There are awards for the best projects. Companies also get to showcase their job descriptions and job postings.
James let me know that the university also promotes the CyCOS conference, a consortium of Universities and Research bodies that hold their conference at the other end of the year. It will be on our calendar.
